Suppressor ownership has entered a new era.

For decades suppressors carried a reputation for being overly complicated to acquire, heavily restricted, and financially out of reach for many shooters. While suppressors have long been legal for civilian ownership in much of the United States, the purchasing process historically included federal paperwork, background checks, and a $200 tax stamp requirement under the National Firearms Act.

But as of January 1st, 2026, one of the biggest barriers to suppressor ownership disappeared when federal legislation eliminated the longstanding $200 tax stamp requirement for qualifying suppressors and certain other NFA-regulated firearms. While suppressors still require ATF approval and compliance with federal and state laws, the removal of the tax stamp cost has significantly increased accessibility for hunters, recreational shooters, and firearm enthusiasts across the country.

With this increased accessibility has come rapidly growing interest in subsonic ammunition and suppressed shooting. Suppressors and subsonic ammunition are no longer niche equipment reserved for those who endure herculean measures. Across hunting camps, shooting ranges, and backcountry adventures, more shooters are discovering the advantages of running suppressed firearms with ammunition specifically engineered for quieter performance.

For many hunters and recreational shooters, the appeal is easy to understand:

  • Reduced noise exposure
  • Improved shooter comfort
  • Reduced recoil and muzzle blast
  • Better communication in the field
  • Increased accuracy, and
  • A more enjoyable shooting experience overall

But despite the growing popularity of suppressors, there’s still a lot of confusion surrounding subsonic ammunition. What exactly makes ammunition “subsonic?” Why does it matter? And what are the real-world benefits for hunters and recreational shooter?

Understanding how suppressors and subsonic ammunition work together can help shooters build quieter, more comfortable, and more effective shooting systems.

What Does “Subsonic” Mean?

Subsonic ammunition is designed to travel below the speed of sound. Under normal atmospheric conditions, the speed of sound is roughly 1,125 feet per second, though temperature and elevation can slightly affect that number depending on time of year and where you reside.

When a bullet exceeds the speed of sound, it creates a sharp sonic crack as it travels through the air. That crack is separate from the sounds produced at the muzzle. Even with a suppressor attached to your firearm, supersonic ammunition still produces that unmistakable downrange crack.

Subsonic ammunition eliminates that sonic boom by keeping the projectile velocity below the speed of sound. The result is a dramatically quieter shooting experience when paired with a suppressed firearm.

How Suppressors Work

Contrary to what movies often portray, suppressors do not make firearms “silent.” A suppressor works by slowing and cooling expanding gases as they exit the muzzle. This reduces the intensity of the muzzle blast and helps lower overall sound signature.

When combined with subsonic ammunition, the suppressor can reduce both muzzle blast and sonic crack. Together, the system becomes substantially quieter and more comfortable to shoot.

Why More Hunters Are Using Suppressors

Suppressor ownership has grown rapidly in recent years, especially among hunters. For many shooters, the advantages become obvious after a single hunt.

Reduced Noise Exposure – One of the biggest benefits is hearing protection. Even a single unprotected rifle shot can expose hunters to damaging sound levels. Suppressors help reduce that exposure significantly, especially in hunting situations where wearing traditional hearing protection many not always be practical.

Improved Shooter Comfort – Suppressors also help reduce perceived recoil and muzzle blast. Less blast often means reduced shooter fatigue, faster follow-up shots, improved communication in the field, and better shooting comfort for newer shooters.

Less Disturbance in the Field – Suppressors can also help reduce disturbance to surrounding property, livestock, or nearby hunting areas. For predator hunters, hog hunters, and landowners managing nuisance animals, quieter shooting can offer practical real-world advantages.

The Role of Subsonic Ammunition

Subsonic ammunition plays a major role in maximizing suppressor performance. While suppressors can still reduce muzzle blast with traditional supersonic loads, subsonic ammunition removes the sonic crack that often remains the loudest part of the shot.

To maintain reliable performance at lower velocities, subsonic loads typically use:

  • Heavier projectiles
  • Specialized powder blends
  • Optimized pressure curves
  • Consistent velocity control

The result is smooth, reliable cycling and consistent performance designed specifically for suppressed firearms.

Popular Uses for Subsonic Ammunition

Subsonic ammunition has become increasingly popular across several shooting disciplines; recreational shooting, predator and hog hunting, training and new shooters.

Many shooters simply enjoy the improved range experience that suppressed subsonic shooting provides. Reduced blast and recoil often makes shooting more enjoyable, especially during extended range sessions.

Subsonic ammunition has become especially popular among predator and hog hunters running suppressed rifles at moderate distances. The reduced noise signature can help minimize disruption while still delivering effective terminal performance within realistic ranges.

Lower recoil and reduced blast can also help newer shooters develop confidence and improve shooting fundamentals without excessive muzzle concussion.

Understanding the Tradeoffs

Like any firearm configuration, subsonic ammunition involved tradeoffs. Because subsonic projectiles travel at lower velocities, shooter should expect:

  • More bullet drop
  • Reduced effective range
  • Different terminal performance characteristics
  • Greater importance on shot placement

Subsonic ammunition is not intended to replace traditional high-velocity hunting loads in every situation. Instead, it provides a specialized solution for shooters prioritizing sound reduction, recoil management, and suppressor optimization. Understanding realistic distances and matching ammunition selection to the intended application remains critical.

Suppressor Maintenance Matters

As suppressor use increases, proper maintenance becomes increasingly important. Suppressors are exposed to:

  • Carbon buildup
  • Copper fouling
  • Powder residue
  • Moisture and debris

Rimfire suppressors deserve especially close attention when it comes to maintenance. High-volume shooting with .22LR platforms is extremely common, and rimfire ammunition powder typically burns a little dirtier along with unjacketed lead projectiles that generate significant carbon and lead fouling. Over time, that buildup can accumulate rapidly inside both firearms and suppressors affecting performance, increasing weight, and making cleaning more difficult if neglected for too long. Because rimfire suppressors often see thousands of rounds in a relatively short amount of time, routine cleaning and maintenance become even more important to ensure reliable operation and long-term suppressor performance.

Over time, fouling accumulation can affect suppressor performance and longevity if left unaddressed. Regular cleaning and proper maintenance helps ensure consistent suppressor performance, reduces buildup, improves service life, and guarantees reliable operation. Just like firearms themselves, suppressors perform best when properly cared for and maintained.

Final Thoughts

Modern suppressors and subsonic ammunition have transformed how many shooters approach hunting and recreational shooting. Today’s shooters have access to purpose-built ammunition engineered specifically for suppressed performance, allowing them to create experiences that are quieter, smoother, and more enjoyable to shoot.

Whether you’re hunting predators, managing hogs, spending long days at the range, or simply looking to reduce blast and recoil, suppressed shooting continues to redefine what modern firearms performance can look like.

As suppressor technology and ammunition advancements continue to evolve, quieter shooting systems are becoming more capable than ever before.
