Sloppy Joes: Bear Meat Edition

You’ve put in the work to harvest your prize spring bear, and now it’s time to cherish all the blood, sweat and (probably) tears by making a meal the whole family will love. Sloppy Joe’s are a classic American staple that can easily be made with bear meat and will quickly become a frequently requested household meal. Here’s how to do it:


  • ¾ cup tomato sauce
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
  • 1 ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup water
  • 1 pound of ground bear meat
  • 4 buns of your choice


  • 1. Cook your bear meat in a skillet or cast-iron pan until well done.
  • 2. Add your wet ingredients and spices.
  • 3. Mix until consistency is as thick or thin as you like. (You can always add a touch of water if it’s too thick)
  • 4. Spoon the sloppy joe meat onto your favorite bun or bread
  • 5. Garnish with coleslaw, some crunchy dill pickles, and red onion.
  • 6. Go time!
