It is no secret that the 9mm Luger, also called the 9mm, is one of the best-known centerfire handgun cartridges on the market. The 9mm is an excellent choice for introducing shooters to the handgun world and for experienced shooters to use in various applications. The 9mm is a mildly recoiling handgun best suited for target shooting, competition shooting, and personal defense. With many different manufacturers on the market, the 9mm can be found in revolvers, pistol caliber carbines (PCCs), and compact or standard semiautomatic handguns, some of which are exceptionally customizable. To top it off, 9mm ammo is cheap, easy to find, and can fit any listed scenarios with proper ammo selection. Ammo selection matters because you do not want to spend dollars on ammo not suited for your scenario! Read along to learn more about the several categories of 9mm ammo and how to optimize your dollar!
We should all strive to be frequent shooters. Target practice and repetition are the keys to achieving better confidence and consistent accuracy. It doesn’t matter if you’re hitting the range, punching paper, ringing steel, or plinking on your back 40 acres; squeezing the trigger and practicing proper form builds muscle memory. This is the secret to becoming a better shooter! You might even consider a lesson from a professional! Building muscle memory also allows you to perform at a higher level effortlessly. When your actions become second nature, you reach a point of competitiveness that can separate you from others. This is a particularly powerful attribute to have when it comes to PCC competitions where the stakes are high and the enemy is time. However, these activities, even the competitive ones, do not require anything special regarding ammo. For handgun practice, you only need a 9mm round loaded with a full metal jacket 9mm bullet, also known as an FMJ. FMJs are bullets with a lead core wrapped by a copper jacket. This copper jacket prevents lead buildup in your firearm and keeps the price point low. Remington’s best 9mm ammo for the range resides in our line of UMC Ammunition. Remington UMC ammunition is Remington's Premier line of 9mm range ammo. Available in various counts, a box of UMC must accompany you during a quick shooting session or a day at the range with friends!
Scenarios where your safety is put in jeopardy can happen when you least expect it: running to the store, filling your vehicle with gas, or even at your own home. As a 9mm carrier, your safety relies on your training and choice of gear. Your choice of gear includes selecting the best 9mm ammo for the job. To optimize your 9mm effectiveness in a defense scenario, you need to have a round loaded with a hollow-point bullet. 9mm hollow point bullets differ from FMJ bullets because they expand rapidly when they hit the target. Rapid controlled expansion transfers the bullet's energy more effectively, so you increase your stopping power, an essential factor for self-defense. Remington’s best 9mm ammo for self-defense falls in its Golden Saber Defense product line. Golden Saber’s brass-jacketed hollow point bullet expands rapidly on impact, and the nickel-plated casing ensures reliable case extraction. Rapid expansion and reliability are the essential ingredients for a high-performance defense round.
“Golden Saber 147’s are what I have in my carry gun. The 147s pack a punch and their expansion is consistent. Knowing the bullet design produces large and consistent mushrooms makes a Golden Saber a high-performance defense product,” – Leland Mason, Remington Ammunition R&D Engineer.
You should consider a bonded bullet for the best results when shooting through barriers. A bonded bullet's jacket and core are hot-bonded together, yielding fantastic weight retention after impact. This allows for greater weight retention after impact and expansion! Consider a load with a bonded bullet if your chances of encountering a barrier are higher. Check out our Golden Saber Bonded product line loaded in 9mm. You can’t go wrong with Remington Golden Saber 9mm ammo!
Suppressors are a great way to have more fun at the range. The obvious benefit of a suppressor is that it reduces the volume of a gun report. This benefit enhances shooter comfort, making shooting more enjoyable for long periods. A great way to improve the noise reduction benefit is to pair it with subsonic ammo. Subsonic ammo differs from the rest because specific loading components result in a bullet being launched below the speed of sound, removing the loud sonic crack. Check out Remington’s Subsonic Handgun Product. Not only does this subsonic 9mm round come in under the radar of the speed of sound, but the enclosed base bullets reduce the buildup of lead in the baffles of the suppressor. Don’t limit yourself to only a handgun here. PCCs can also be used with suppressors and paired with Subsonic ammo. It’s a no-brainer here, folks!
Packing sufficient momentum to knock down steel targets and enough velocity to take a longer shot, 124 grain 9mm bullets are a great choice to shoot through your handgun and PCC. It is the sweet spot between a lighter 115gr and heavier 147gr. Remington’s 124-grainers are loaded with self-defense hollow points and FMJ bullets.
Long days or frequent visits to the range can add up fast. They add up even faster when you’re shooting the wrong kind of ammo. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with occasionally shooting hollow points to get a feel for them, but you should consider switching to a comparable target load for practice rounds! You wouldn’t want to use hollow points for competition either. All you need for high-volume plinking or paper punching is an FMJ. Get the most bang for your buck by buying in bulk. Bulk quantities save you money in the long run. Remington offers bulk 9mm ammo in 250-count mega packs, 350-count Range Buckets, 500-count Jumbo packs, and the king of them all, a 1000-count pack. As they say, some is good, more is better, and too much is just right!
