Muzzleloading Safety Message

ATTENTION: MUZZLELOADER HUNTERS AND SHOOTERS - An Issue Of Safety!
MUZZLELOADING FIREARMS ARE DIFFERENT
There are many differences between the function and features of
muzzleloading firearms and those of modern rifles, shotguns, and
pistols. Remington Model 700 ML and 700 MLS muzzleloading rifles, by
their very nature, incorporate many of the basic features of
primitive muzzleloading firearms. Therefore, besides following the
Ten Commandments of Firearms Safety that apply to all firearms,
users of muzzleloading firearms must adhere to additional safety
practices that are specific to muzzleloaders. Before you use your
new muzzleloader for the first time, it is imperative that you read
and understand the instructions for the operation and safe use of
your muzzleloading firearm.
WEAR PROTECTIVE GEAR
Because of their primitive nature, muzzleloading firearms produce
more firing flash and residues than modern smokeless powder
firearms. The percussion cap, musket cap, 209 primer, Black Powder,
and Pyrodex® are each capable of producing hot gases and flying
particles when fired. This is true even when firing only a cap or
primer without a powder load and bullet. The shooter must always
wear protective eyewear, hearing protection, and a heavy shirt or
jacket. Bystanders must be kept well behind the shooter. Failure to
follow these precautions may result in serious injury to the shooter
or bystanders.
SMOKELESS POWDER WARNING
All muzzleloader hunters and shooters need to be continually aware
of the extra and unique safety precautions associated with the use
of muzzle loading firearms. Almost all of the muzzleloaders in
existence today are "Black Powder Only Muzzleloaders," meaning that
the only safe propellants for use in these guns are black powder or
an approved black powder substitute, such as Pyrodex. The same
warning that has been in effect for the last 100 years remains just
as valid today: USING ANY QUANTITY OF MODERN SMOKELESS POWDER IN
MUZZLELOADING GUNS CAN RESULT IN SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH TO BOTH THE
SHOOTER AND/OR BYSTANDERS.
NEVER USE MODERN SMOKELESS POWDER IN A MUZZLE LOADING FIREARM.
